Rationale

The azure field represents both James Buchan's Naval service and his many years of government service in Washington, D.C. The mullet is in recognition of both his service during World War II and his time as a speech writer at the White House. The thistle symbolizes James' Scottish ancestry, of which he was inordinately proud. The bend sinister with three lion heads reflects both his distant relationship with John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (Azure a fess between three lions' heads erased Argent) and his clan Buchan affiliation (Buchan of Achmacoy, Chief of the Name: Argent three lion heads erased Sable.) The crest represents both his early education and career in Journalism, and his government career as speech writer and communications assistant to a Congressman and the White House. The motto is indicative of his strong sense of family. The motto is placed above the crest in the Scottish style in respect for James' ancestral heritage.
