In 1910, the University adopted a coat of arms bearing a flaming phoenix and the motto, Crescat Scientia, Vita Excolatur (Let knowledge grow from more to more, and so be human life enriched). A metal plate with the coat of arms was set on the floor inside Mitchell Tower near the entrance to the Reynolds Club. It is said that if stepped upon you would not graduate.
